Smokeless powder is the name given to a number of gun powder-like propellants used in firearms which produce negligible smoke when fired, unlike the older black powder which it replaced. Smokeless powder is composed of a high percentage of nitrocellulose and lesser parts of graphite, potassium nitrate, oils and plasticisers. Some varieties also contain nitroglycerin.
